Mr. Bonkerz - Bonkerz: Vol. 06

The Holidays! High five - You know, just another excuse to get drunk in the office. Bake tons of cookies. Online shop. Spend time with family.

But then you realize that amidst all that fun stuff...

You're stressed because you're about to leave your beloved cube for an entire week (God, does that sound depressing that I'm saying that?!). You ate your weight in cookie butter and cookies this past weekend. Your memory is getting so sharp that you indeed, memorized your CC number while online shopping for friends and family. And your family? They are freaking awesome, but you're about to spend an entire week with them. That's a lot of time with your parents and two brothers. Youtotallyknowwhatimtalkingaboutandifyoudontimaterribleperson?

So while you're busy tying up odds and ends, remember to make time for yourself. You know...To like, relax. Disco dance party in your room. Or at work. OR! In your car! Remember to enjoy the mixes that friends share with you.

Yes. That's right, mixes friends share with you because we are all overdue for some NuDisco from Mr. Bonkerz, and luckily the wait is over as Volume 6 hit the Internets for DDPing people like you and me.

It's awesome. And I mean awesome in the way where I've already listened to it once in my room last night whilst in a sugar coma, once on the way to work, and once at work as I was kicking my to-do list in the ass. From start to finish it is what dance parties are made of, and nothing short of what you would expect if you are ever going to see Bonkerz live.

Sans the cookies, unless you're like me and realize that there are baked goods everywhere. you. turn. in. your. house.

At the 9:30 minute mark is when the mix starts to pick up with the funky track by Disco Tech, "Full Tilt" at the 10 minute mark, which segues into Drop Out Orchestra Dub track, "Reality TV". Something about that bassline that is ever so familiar in their tracks with the vocals. Holy freaking obsessed. And I had not heard the Munga 5AM remix of "Elisco" that clocked in at 24'ish minutes - but wow. Super funky. Super awesome. Super obsessed.

Throughout this mix I kept thinking about how I loved the transitions and it's always noticeable in Matt's mixes; the segues just "happen" and you know the track changed, but not enough that it detracts from the song. #winning

Listen now! Grab some cookies and pretend like you're actually at a show. OR, you could also just stalk Mr. Bonkerz on Facebook - he has some gigs in 2012 coming up, and you don't want to miss them! I think all of the above are good suggestions - so do it.

A DP Chronicle and BXENTRIC- The November Jockey Club

Well, as this blog is called the Dance Party Chronicles, I figured I should fill you all in on an epic Dance Party that went down this past Saturday. The DPC crew headed to the new Filmore in Silver Spring, MD to catch Breakbot and Chromeo. Breakbot was the opener and we made sure to get there early so we didn't miss a second. Personally, I hadn't listened to too much Breakbot until about a month ago. I had heard his hits like "Fantasy" and "Baby I'm Yours" and a few remixes but not too much else. About a month ago I started listening to his mixes and a few live sets and was blown away. Soon after, I discovered he was touring with Chromeo and had a show in the area. I was pumped.

Breakbot had just started when we arrived at the show and we were ready to get down. He threw down an incredible set that left us all wanting more. At one point, he dropped the beat so hard I literally swallowed my gum. Later in the night Chromeo played a funktastic set that was also a lot of fun. I got the chance to briefly talk to Breakbot at one point after his set. He was really nice and down to earth. I talked to him about his some of his mixes and he also taught me the proper pronunciation of his first name (its Tih-bow in case you were curious). All in all, it was a great night and another successful dance party.

Moving on. November is upon us, which means a fresh batch of new mixes has started to be released. Last night, BXENTRIC released his latest mix in his Jockey Club monthly mix series. It has a lot of tracks that I am not very familiar with which is always a breath of fresh air. It is 77 minutes of disco funk with some deep house thrown is there as well. I really enjoyed this mix and its definitely worth checking out. Happy Hump Day to all.

Mid-Day Disco Dance Party, Round VIII

Hypothetically speaking, what will a weekend in Blacksburg, VA do to a healthy, 24 year-old Asian girl? I don't know exactly; perhaps she has been recovering for the last two days? Most normal people wouldn't go completely nuts at the fact that all drinks were less than $5.00, including whiskey gingers that were ONLY $3.00. Do you know what that means to said Asian girl? One word: Trouble.

It could also mean that said Asian girl woke up with cookies in her purse. Hypothetically speaking, that is. Because who doesn't buy cookies from the college kids on the side of the street at midnight?! #hypotheticalasiangirlproblems

Since this is all hypothetical, let's just pretend that the last few days said Asian girl has been cleaning. Recovering. Baking. Recovering. Writing. Recovering.

So maybe said Asian girl shouldn't drink two days in a row, but maybe she is trying to make it up to her favorite invisible internet friends with a very funked out, straight up soulful disco party! You know, a Mid-Day DDP for when you need a pick-me-up but don't want coffee, or after you've eaten lunch and want to take a nap under your desk.

This particular mix is from Mr. Mendel, a 24 year-old DJ from from Amsterdam. He started spinning hiphop and gained a residency at Freakin Ill, a nightclub in Bitterzoet, Amsterdam. Soon after, his job at Waxwell Records opened him up to a world of funk, disco, soul and his love for vinyl - something very evident in his mixes. (source).

I stumbled on this "Discology" mix about a month ago and Mr. Mendel described it perfectly as a "high-energy mix of classics and more unknown tracks, exploring the world of disco. It takes you on a trip through soul, classic disco, boogie, afro-disco & p-funk."

I am freaking obsessed with the track that drops at 6:40 that is the epitome of funky, and its name is even "Funk You Up" by The Sequence. How ironic, right? Around the 14 minute mark, People's Choice "Do It Any Way You Wanna" makes an entrance, whose sampling you may recognize from Escort's "Cocaine Blues" song that has popped up in mixes before. I don't want to completely give away the entire mix, but while listening to it, I guarantee many songs will be familiar and you'll find yourself nodding your head to the soulful, funky vibes. On a side note, I found it very interesting to listen to more of the "old school" disco, and realize how nu disco is obviously different, but you can still understand where its roots come from.

And there's my .02 for the day. Let's all be glad that the hypothetical Asian girl is recovered, and get right to the dance party!

Daft Funk Friday - Mix by Cyclist and Pat Lok

Well with Becca on her way to New Orleans, it’s time for a Friday guest post. As a daily DPC reader and a dance party lover, I’m honored to fill in for her. Today is the autumnal equinox and summer has officially come to a close. This summer was filled with countless dance parties, but just because the seasons are changing does not mean we are going to stop dancing.

Although not many mixes were released this week (compared to the plethora of material that came out last week), I did come across a mix that I wanted to share. Below is the Daft Funk 1.5 Mixtape by Pat Lok and Cyclist. Admittedly, I’d never heard of Cyclist or Pat Lok before listening to this mix but I really enjoyed the funky, old-school feel. If you follow this blog, you will definitely recognize some of the artists and tracks. Have a funky-fun-filled Friday as well as a funky-fun-filled Fall.
