Dance Party? Starting this week, DPC will aim to highlight and disseminate some
of our favorite mixtapes, podcasts, and EP releases from across the wide world of
EDM, including our own backyard. Your personal curator for this intergalactic
journey is new staff writer Sam Warren, a NY-to-D.C. transplant who listens to
far too much of this stuff to be healthy. Each week, Sam will break down a
handful of mixes in the hope that, somehow, somewhere, a booty will be shaken
due to his efforts.
Festival season (and summertime concerts) brings out the best and worst in me. My inner-hippie, fun-loving, and irresponsible self just wants to do it all. My young professional, upstanding citizen in the District screams at me to stay put. Please, Becca, be normal. Remember that you have that thing called a job... so don't drive three hours, seven hours, or however far it is, to go see music. Just stay home, bake some cookies and shove them in your face. Remember how much fun you have organizing your closet?
But if I were normal, I wouldn't be able to say I finally saw Oliver and Yacht this past weekend in upstate New York, which was pretty freaking fly. Yea, I drove seven hours with friends to go to a festival for one day of music. Trust me, you read that right.
I know I say everything is "fly", "freaking awesome" or "best thing ever" way too much on the blog, but hear me out: this time it is warranted. Between the screen set-up, crazy dancers, and 90 minute full-on dance party that Oliver provided - it was truly something that I won't forget. It is impressive and a feat within itself for an artist to hit on what felt like every genre of music in one hour and thirty minutes.
Hello Cyber Friends! Hope everyone had a good week. I want to give a big shout out to everyone who came out to the Don Cornelius - Soul Train Tribute Party this past Friday night. It was quite a funkin' dance party if I do say so myself. It was such a blast to get down to old school disco tunes in funky-fresh throwback gear and to shake it in a Soul Train dance line! One of the highlights was the disco edit of the Star Wars theme. Things quickly turned into a dark side disco dance party. Now if I could direct you attention to the Darth Vader Disco Ball... someone buy me one, please! On a side note, my latest batch of home brewed beer is a Black IPA called Death Star IPA. I somehow thought that this was relevant.
Well enough random commentary and on to the music. This week we were blessed with a plethora of mixes and many of them were heat rocks (Note: Heat rocks are different than kick rocks). Below you will find hopefully enough music to keep you dancing through the weekend. Feast your ears on these and as they say, "A dance party a day, keeps the doctor away."
We've been waiting for Classy Dancer VI for a while now and here it is. I actually just started this mix, but if its anything like the previous 5 Classy Dancers it is going to be amazing.

Last night I decided to do an "arm blast workout" on our television because sometimes I get sick of cardio disco parties. And when I say I'm sick of cardio disco parties I mean the strength of my arms resembles that of a 5 year old. #notstrongasiangirlproblems
That TWELVE minute program has resulted in me having a harder time putting stuff in my mouth (TWSS?). So not only am I sore, I am also tired because the amount of coffee ingested has not been enough. At all. With that being said, stay away if you know what's good for you.
Last week I mentioned "Kamp!" because I am obsessed with one of their songs, "Cairo", and Moullinex does an awesome remix of the song. I really enjoy the original and many artists included it in their mixes about a month or two ago!
After more investigation (and by investigation I mean searching Soundcloud) I found a Mixtape that Kamp! released last month. It has the ability of taking me to my happy place. After showing Rashad the mix, he responded with, "wow that tracklist is so random," Yes, yes it is - but it works.
Especially around the 3:15 minute mark when Tood Tejre's remix of Paul Simon's "Diamond" comes on. Give me a pina colada and a big straw hat!
Hall and Oates is bomb. There, I said it. 5:50 in. You're welcome! And around the 16:30 mark an oldie, but goodie comes up - Aeroplane's remix of Lindstrøm & Christabelle's "Baby Can't Stop" which flows very nicely into Falke and Alan Braxe's "Love Lost", and even better into Groove Armada's re-edit of "Josephine". And finally, the last 'highlight' I will mention is at the 32:27 where it marks my obsession with Mirror People's remix of "More Tigers".

Baking is slowly consuming my life. I made pumpkin donuts the other night. Donuts are a million times better than cupcakes. Give me baked confections with holes in them. Now.
Speaking of baking, my friends have pumpkin brownies. I told them I would barter these for said brownies. Looks like I will be having a dance party in the kitchen tonight. I'm not complaining.
It's a rainy, dreary day in DC. Rainy, dreary days in DC call for extra awesome DDPs. And now I'm obsessed with this track!
This particular DDP is from the Canadian blog, The Ambitious C, and part of their mixtape series. I love their mixtape series, and my favorite Drop Out Orchestra mix happens to be from this site - and I've mentioned it before! Mirror People (Rui Maia) is a DJ/Producer from Portugal, and was kind of enough to share his mix via Soundcloud. He has said he has been influenced by such labels as DFA and Italians Do it Better!, and thus Mirror People was born and his mixes and tracks show his love for disco-house oriented music. (source)
The mixtape includes many familiar tracks, and I approve of all them. While they are familiar, I don't think these are 'played out' yet, and haven't been on too many mixes that are circulating currently. I love Rocco Raimundo's re-interpretation of "Foreign Language". That song will never, ever get old to me. LOVE 27'ish minutes in, too. DDP (!!!)

We're back and alive from whiskey-fueled DDPs in the mountains of West Virginia. It was great. I ate s'mores, found whipped cream flavored vodka at a store, lost horribly in cornhole, and may or may not have rekindled my appreciation for Sisqo's "Thong Song". Uhhh... don't ask.
We hope everyone had a great weekend, and many of you are probably still enjoying the weekend because you have today off. Well, I'll spare you my bitching and moaning, but I do not. Therefore, I'm already day-dreaming about this coming weekend and I just realized that it's been awhile since I've had myself a good dance party. I know, it's pretty traumatic. #asiangirlproblems.
So I thought it might be fun educational to share some tips that I have learned along the way. Or maybe I thought this is also a good refresher for me as I plan to have many DDPs this weekend at U Street Music Hall - Fred Falke on Friday, Matthew Dear on Saturday - but more on that later (read: Preview of the weekend post later this week!)
The Do's and Don'ts of Dance Parties
Do: Go with friends. Shows are more fun with friends. I repeat, shows are ALWAYS more fun with friends. Don't: Go to a Holy Ghost! show by yourself. The show ends up being 40 minutes and that entire 40 minutes is spent standing in a corner looking awkward. The boy standing next to you has on skinnier jeans than you and is donning a scarf that you'd like to own. After the show ends, you can't find your car because you are a space cadet. You aimlessly walk around U Street (uh, bad idea) trying to find your car, call your brother who lives in San Diego because maybe he can help you locate your car. Yea, it made sense at the time.
Do: Make sure that you're not getting completely hammered on an empty stomach. Don't: Try to make up for the fact that pregaming was more important than dinner, so you find yourself at the 9:30 Club Backbar, a box of cookies deep, shouting "this is the best dance party EVER," to everyone. People will look at you like you're crazy and the friends you came with - they probably aren't your friends anymore.
Do: Meet new people. Shows are more fun when you meet new people and make new friends. And I like new friends. Don't: Forget their name. Enough said.
Do: Save friends from creepy people. Don't: Laugh at Becca when guys come dancing all up on her sh*t like it ain't no thang. (BTW, thanks Rashad! haha)
Do: Buy lots of drinks at the bar. Don't: Buy lots of drinks for everyone at the bar. Woops.
Do: Show appreciation when you hear a song that you love being dropped by a DJ you adore. Don't:Drop an entire beer on the floor in the process of said appreciation (Aeroplane in April) and try to play it off like it didn't happen. People saw and their feet are wet.
Do: Arrive early. Sometimes acts that you end up enjoying the best are first on the bill. Don't: End up at the venue first. You'll be that guy sitting at the bar, waiting for your friends to come and take whiskey shots to pass the time.
Do: Listen to this mix because you need a DDP. Don't: Miss the song at 8.05 in. It's great. It makes me happy. And 17 minutes in, flashback to Tommy Boy anyone?

It wouldn't be a proper Friday without some good ol' Disco! I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't supply you some NuDisco to get the dance party started. It would be downright shameful of me to not...never mind, you get it. Well August is nearly gone and as far this summer goes, we've heard some of the hottest mixes so far this year. Mighty Mouse say, "to hell with August, I'm gonna get September started right!" (not an actual quote). The London based group, just dropped a straight-to-the-point Disco/NuDisco mix (with hints of house, which seems obligatory lately). This is apparently the first of new series of monthly mixes as well as the start of a new venture for the group:
"Here's the first in our new monthly mixtapes. If you didn't know we announced this week that we separated the band away from Mighty Mouse and it will be called Empress, this way Mighty Mouse can get back to being a disco loving psychedelic mouse from space. So couldn't help putting lot's of tasty old disco in this mix with some exclusives!" (Soundcloud)

I'm pretty sure you can count on some gems next week. Rashad has some great ideas and I can't wait for him to share them with you! And because I already know myself, you'll probably get at least one, if not two, posts about something stupid I did. Because let's be honest, I'm going to be drunk bear at least for some of the festival, and will only be able to express my experience in "OMGs" and words like shiny or beep and boop.

So how long does it take to climb to 37,000 ft? If you're flying with FF Airlines, apparently about a year! It's been that long since their last installment, the Mid-Flight Mixtape. Off the back of their HOT new single, "Foreign Language", this mix is an overdue but welcome dance party starter. It's filled with absolute dance floor bangers and remixes, especially Drop Orchestra's interpretation of "Foreign Language"! There's plenty of other goodies...from Aeroplane, Holy Ghost!, Cut Copy, Penguin Prison, and I'm always happy to hear Metronomy's "The Bay" in a mix.
