DPC Local Disco Showcase: Brian Billion

We are one week away from DPC’s relaunch festivities. Yes, I’m referring to the Local Disco Showcase at U Street Music Hall, on February 6th, and we’ve got your spotlights on each DJ of the line coming to you all week.

Brian Billion’s avatar
First up is an individual who needs no introduction to those who have  frequented the DC electronic music scene over the past decade. You’ve probably seen him at U Street Music Hall performing alongside Classixx or most recently Benoit & Sergio.

Or maybe at 9:30Club,  for the ridiculous 90's dance party known as "No Scrubs".

You might have even spotted him behind the booth at U Hall handling the lights that help create the perfect energy on the dance floor.

Have you noticed all those amazing posters draped over the venue’s walls? He’s responsible for those as well.   Meet U Street Music co-owner and one of DC's favorite DJs, Brian Billion.

We recently caught up with the man and dished up a serving of rapid fire questions. So sit back and take a fantastic Disco voyage through his responses:

DPC: Biggest influences from the Classic Disco Era?

BB: Giorgio Moroder

         Cerrone
         SOLAR Records (Los Angeles)

DPC: Nu Disco Era?

DPC: If you could see one DJ in 2013, it would be... ?

BB: Dixon

DPC Bonus Question: Who is the Queen of Disco ?

Give Brian's most recent mix a listen. It’s smooth and full of mood-setting Disco and House flavor.....drink it up!

Stay tuned this week, as we’ve got more spotlights, interviews, and mixes from the DJs who will be providing the grooves for DPC relaunch party, February 6, at U Street Music Hall.

Ticket Giveaway! French Express Tour @ U Street Music Hall (DC)

The French Express US Tour is making a stop in DC tomorrow, and to say we are excited is a gross understatement. Back when this was announced in the fall, I just about lost my marbles because having one of the four is in my mind awesome, but all four of them?!? Shut the freaking front door. I apologize in advance if any of you are within a ten foot radius of me tomorrow evening.

If you're not familiar with the record label, we've featured them on the blog here before, and at the end of the summer, I emphatically shoved Moon Boots' remix of "Headphones" in your faces.

We've got a pair of tickets to giveaway thanks to our kind friends at U Street Music Hall.

Read on to get the scoop and preview some tracks that we're excited to -hopefully- hear tomorrow:

Jupiter - United Summer of America Mixtape

Festival season (and summertime concerts) brings out the best and worst in me. My inner-hippie, fun-loving, and irresponsible self just wants to do it all. My young professional, upstanding citizen in the District screams at me to stay put. Please, Becca, be normal. Remember that you have that thing called a job... so don't drive three hours, seven hours, or however far it is, to go see music. Just stay home, bake some cookies and shove them in your face. Remember how much fun you have organizing your closet?

But if I were normal, I wouldn't be able to say I finally saw Oliver and Yacht this past weekend in upstate New York, which was pretty freaking fly. Yea, I drove seven hours with friends to go to a festival for one day of music. Trust me, you read that right.

I know I say everything is "fly", "freaking awesome" or "best thing ever" way too much on the blog, but hear me out: this time it is warranted. Between the screen set-up, crazy dancers, and 90 minute full-on dance party that Oliver provided - it was truly something that I won't forget. It is impressive and a feat within itself for an artist to hit on what felt like every genre of music in one hour and thirty minutes.

Disco Tech - April Beatdown Mix

The District has had its fair share of disco dance parties (DDPs) this past month and I would be lying if I said it hasn't been awesomely exhausting.

Friday night was nothing short of amazing as Beautiful Swimmers, Tiger & Woods, and Tim Sweeney had the U Street Music Hall moving until 3am. It was one of those times where I stood there danced in awe of how much talent the duo of Tiger & Woods showcased from the start to finish of their set. I was in dance party heaven as they dropped track after track, causing me to exclaim, "YES, I LOVE THIS TRACK!" while spinning in circles and jumping up and down.

To say the least, this month April has been a beat down for this DPC crew member in the form of dance parties, whiskey and debauchery.

It's Monday now, and I have a hard time listening to rowdy dance music when I'm hungover or tired;  so Disco Tech's April Beatdown Mix could not come at a better time. To keep things to the point: it's chock full of soulful tracks that had my head nodding in approval from start to finish. Around 5 and a half minutes in, Sleazy Beats recordings slowmo track, "Women Don't Want to Love Me", by Modsleep, kicked in, and later transitions beautifully into the  LTJ's rework, "Light".

I've come to the conclusion that LTJ Xperience has some of the best edits/reworks out there in the DDP world, as evidenced by the "Happiness" track that drops at the 9 minute mark. The bassline at 25 minutes in is reminiscent of a track I've heard in a David August mix. Same with the the track at 34 minutes in (if anyone can ID - please let me know) which is almost too funky for me to handle! At the 37:15 minutes, "Slow Days" by Sunner Soul transitions in and I found myself wishing my headphones had better sounding  bass to do it justice. The track was just released on April 17th on Vintage Music...so heads up, DJ friends - I'm going to pester one of you until I hear it played out somewhere ;).

So this is the part where I shut up and tell you to listen to the dang mix because you need this in your life. Here's to a new week, more dance parties on the horizon, and not forgetting to close my tab out this weekend!

Feature: Disco in The Dark

Here’s another out of the ordinary post from your friends at DPC. This feature post is our way of supporting the burgeoning disco/house scene in the Washington D.C. area. So expect more stuff like this and other special content, among other changes, as DPC continues to grow and evolve. And, yes, there's FANTASTIC, mix waiting for you at the end!

Earlier this month, we did a feature on The Don Cornelius - Soul Train Tribute party, the brainchild of DPC friend, Matthew “Mr. Bonkerz” Lipsit. It was nothing less than a huge success on all fronts. Afros, flowing chest hair, ridiculous and tacky outfits with accessories, and massive for-the-books Soul Train lines made for one of the rowdiest, and sweatiest, get-downs this city has had the chance to shake its collective groove thang at. A slightly belated, but well deserved congratulations and “Thank You” from the DPC crew goes out to D.C.’s Mr. Bonkerz, The Metaphysical, Trev-Ski, and William DeVon for making that happen.

The Metaphysical, Mr. Bonkerz, Trev-Ski

Epic Soul Train Line

Well, the bonk man is at it again. While approaching the one year anniversary of his monthly cookie fueled disco dance party, Shenaniganz, his latest venture brings us back to The BlackCat DC. This time in the form of an overdue disco collision between himself and, DJs Remote Ctrl and Sneakers in the Dryer. Get ready for: Disco in the Dark

Bonkerz took a short break from spreading beats and cookies to have some words with DPC:

DPC: How excited are you to be coming up on the 1 year anniversary for Shenaniganz?

Bonk: It's a great feeling! I reached out to Lisa (the booking agent at 9:30 club who used to handle backbar duties) in January 2011 and she gave me a chance. I really didn't know what to expect but i had a vision all along. Providing an upbeat disco party where people could let loose, play what THEY truly wanted and hold nothing back. It's been quite a ride and am truly grateful that so many talented DJ's have agreed to be a part of it and help it grow. I'll be having my good buddy, DJ Marmon (NY) join me for the anniversary next month with as promised, an all out cookie buffet......you'll see :)

And of course, a loyal following of friends and disco enthusiasts made it all possible. You all know who you are...it means the world to me and none of this would've been possible without you! For those wondering where I came up with the party name, i must give credit to my sister. We are huge fans of the movie, "Super Troopers". I insisted we put a "z" on the end and the rest is history.

DPC: How did you feel about the success of the Soul Train Party?
Bonk: Tough to express it through words. But the phrase, "Fuck Yeah" comes to mind. It's no secret that I love disco, especially the older, classic stuff. Performers like Ashford & Simpson, Earth, Wind & Fire, Diana Ross and Sylvester paved the way for today's disco scene and made everything i'm doing today possible. I've been a huge fan of Soul Train for quite some time now. I'm not exactly sure how many episodes were created but I got most of them, i think...(80+ DVD's!)

The idea for a soul train party had been on my mind for the past 6 months. With the unfortunate passing of Soul Train creator Don Cornelius, a tribute was necessary. I reached out to a handful of local disco DJ's and the response was overwhelming. We also received great press and an abundance of promotional assistance from several local blogs and newspapers. It was really touching to see such a great response from our city. Most people dressed up in their classic disco gear and we successfully conducted multiple soul train lines accompanied by additional lighting and a good ol' fog machine! An amazing night that properly celebrated "Soul Train" and the origin of disco. Who knows? Maybe we'll do it again later this year :)

DPC: Do you think there's a growing scene of disco/nudisco/house in Washington D.C.?

Bonk: Absolutely! There's a growing realization that disco is back on the rise, especially here in D.C. It seems fitting that the first show at U Street Music Hall 2 years ago was a nu-disco act. So many talented DJ's around the world are re-creating/editing disco classics and making them more suitable for a club environment and the masses are eating it up. People like Rayko, Leftside Wobble and Nelue have had a huge impact in today's scene. And then you have Aeroplane, The Magician, Gigamesh, Lou Teti, Jacques Renault, Drop Out Orchestra, Flight Facilities and so many more helping to create a new wave of disco for the younger generations. If somebody would've told me last year that Dee-Lite's "Groove Is In The Heart" would be remixed and become a mainstream success, I would've laughed in their face. How do you take a perfect track and make it.....better? It just goes to show you that anything is possible.

An extensive amount of gratitude should also be given to a man who's been doing it for over 25 years and is without a doubt my favorite and biggest inspiration: Dimitri From Paris. Without his consistent contributions and ridiculous longevity, who knows where Disco would be. I highly recommend those unfamiliar to check him out.

DPC: Where do you see it going?
Bonk: I have no idea and that is a great feeling! There are so many different types of disco receiving overwhelming worldwide support. I've become quite fond of cosmic, spacey disco over the past couple years. Scandinavian masterminds like Lindstrom and Prins Thomas are two of my favorites and influenced my decision to recently start my own space disco party at the Velvet Lounge here in D.C. It's quite refreshing and gives me an opportunity to step outside the box and explore aspects of disco I've grown to love. Italo disco is back on the rise with dudes like Bottin and Rodion leading the charge. Disco as a genre has expanded tremendously over the past 5 years and I'm very excited to see where it goes from here.

DPC: What should people expect at Disco in the Dark?

Bonk: Well, I don't want to ruin the surprise. That would just be cruel! Guess you'll have to swing by to find out :)

DPC: Can you at least tell us how the "Disco In The Dark" DJ lineup came about?

Bonk: That I can do! I had been friends with both Remote Ctrl and Sneakers prior to performing with them. We all have a fondness for the jamband scene and it should be no surprise that we share a similar interest in our disco preferences. We would often see each other at shows and talk shop. It was inevitable that we would join forces. I had Remote join me at my December "Shenaniganz" party where he made his official debut and then had Sneakers join me for his DC debut the following month. Besides throwing down stellar sets, they also brought out a huge crowd of friends. I knew this was the beginning of something special. We joke about checking each other's playlists ahead of time because there is a good chance we will be overlapping. I think it's fucking great!

I'm stoked to be doing a party with these dudes. It's also pretty neat and completely coincidental that we each represent a different part of town (Bonkerz in DC, Remote in VA, Sneakers in MD).

DPC: (Obligatory) What's your go to dance move?

Bonk: How did I know you were going to ask me that question? Haha...Most of my dance moves tend to involve my arms or hands. Growing up in the jamband scene, shows typically run longer and conserving the energy in my legs was essential. It just became somewhat of a habit as I refused to ever sit down during a show. I guess every once in a while I'll bust out a boxstep or a Jim Carey "Dumb and Dumber" type routine, but those tend to be special occasions. An old girlfriend used to say it looked like I was rolling dice (think "craps). So yeah, that's my move....be on the lookout party people!

Thanks, Mr. Bonkerz for having that enlightening little chat with us.

As for the rest of the Disco in the Dark DJs, there's DPC's resident selector, Rashad "Remote Ctrl" Williams, who has quickly garnered attention around D.C.'s favorite dance spots. And also, DPC friend and Baltimore native, Eric "Sneakers in the Dryer" Henderson (whom you may remember provided us with a lovely GuestMix not long ago).

Well it does appear that there's a sort of Neopolitan ice cream sandwich of a dance party on the horizon. Funky, deep, rowdy, sexy: all your favorite flavors of Disco will be well represented. The combination of these disc jockeys in this all- you-can-dance disco-thon debut, may prove to be the next source of get-down, boogie, and shake-a-leg in the District's up and coming disco movement.

If you missed it (shame on you first of all), here's Mr. Bonkerz' most recent mix. It's a huge hour and a half journey through Disco:

Figure of 8 - BBC Across the Line Mix

I hope that everyone had a weekend full of car bombs, green beer, and questionable life decisions. I (unfortunately) spent most of it administering a certification exam for work. Don't feel too sorry for me though; I was out the celeraging with U Street Music Hall (2 years old!) - my own St. Patrick's day with Four Tet on Tuesday (holy marry me, Kieran) and then got weird across the district with a disco dance party benefit and Maceo Plex on Thursday.

Life is all about compromise (in theory) and sometimes going into work with stamps still on your hand (despite trying to wash them off whilst showering) is exactly what you need. And then... you find yourself eating Thai food in your hotel room alone, while watching re-runs of That 70s Show on St. Patrick's Day. #dontalljumptobemyfriend

In fact, the closest I got to anything St. Patrick's day related was receiving a text from Tyler (mid-afternoon, mind you), alerting me that I should come hang out once I got off from work because car bombs were being had and we needed to have a serious meeting over them. When I finally left Northern Virginia on Sunday afternoon, I immediately grabbed my phone to stalk SoundCloud (like a freak). The hotel I was at didn't have good service, and passing out around 10:30 at night on Friday and Saturday left little time for browsing of dance parties. Enter: Figure of 8's BBC Across the Line mix. 30 minutes of dance party goodness filled with energy. Just what I needed after a music-less weekend. #winning

If you're not familiar with Figure of 8, you should totally get into it! Dermot McGowan, the UK producer genius behind Figure of 8, debuted his first EP "No one Cries for Me" from On the Fruit Records, this past February and it does not disappoint. The original features haunting, yet beautiful vocals from Sophie Galphin and all of the remixes are spot on. Each one I listen to I love and am obsessed with, and you should be too! This EP is probably my favorite of 2012 thus far - it's that good.

Figure Of 8 Feat. Sophie Galpin - No One Cries For Me EP by On The Fruit Records

The mix starts out with A.N.D.Y.'s (formerly 1/2 of Mustang) remix of Supermen Lovers, "Say no More" and transitions nicely into Mario Basanov's (obsessed with this guy lately!) remix of "Can't Believe" around the 3:40 mark. Mario Basanov is currently a favorite of mine and as my friend pointed out, my head almost exploded from awesomeness cause this track is SO. FREAKING. GOOD.

Crazy P - Changes (Mario Basanov Remix) 12'' by Mario Basanov

I especially enjoyed this mix because around the halfway mark it picks up a deep house with Romanthony's track, "Hold On". The weird continues and is nicely rounded out with Soul Clap's, "Need Your Lovin'" song from their debut album release (on 4/20 - btw), EFUNK.

It pairs nicely with a large cup of coffee, so give this 30 minute mix a listen to get your Tuesday morning going. And if you're in the area this weekend (I'll be running around Philly with some of my favorite people.), check out our event page for what's going on in the district because DC is for disco <3ers.

The Supermen Lovers - Say No More (A.N.D.Y. Remix)
The Mekanism- Can't Believe (Mario Basanov Remix)

Birthday DP and Moises Mestas- February 2012 Mixtape:

Aeroplane. Photo courtosey of Liz O'Leary
Well I am sitting here in the Dulles Airport waiting to catch a plane to Vermont to visit some good friends, go skiing, and drink whiskey in the mountains. I was just reflecting on this past weekend and one of the most epic dance parties in recent memory. Last Thursday was my 25th Birthday, but the celebration went down on Saturday night. Friends new and old, from near and far, assembled for what would turn out to be a night to remember (or possibly not remember). After some whiskey, cookies, and brief pre-dance party stretching (really), we headed over to U Street Music Hall for DJ Provoke, Cassian, and Aeroplane. For the next 5 hours, we danced, drank, and partied our way into the early morning hours. DJ Provoke held it down to start off the night. Cassian's set was absolutely incredible. Afterwards he came down onto the dance floor to get down to Aeroplane with us. Aeroplane's set was an energy filled, stellar performance that featured some of my favorite tracks. I've seen Aeroplane 4 or 5 times now and I would have to say this was the best set I've seen yet. After it was all said and done, my body was aching but I couldn't stop smiling.

Anyway, the mix that I've been listening to as I wait for my flight has made it impossible to sit still. I've gotten more than a few weird looks now. The mix is the February 2012 Mixtape from Moises Mestas. Moises Mestas came onto my radar a couple of months ago when I heard his December Mixtape. He pretty much takes all of the HUGE tracks that have recently been released and packs them into mixtapes that would start dance parties in 3rd world countries. I'm not kidding. The mix starts out with one of my favorite tracks and my favorite remix of said track, Goldroom's remix of Lancelot's "We Can Dance." Lancelot is a young up and coming DJ from Australia who I expect to see some pretty big things from this year. And Goldroom is... well its Goldroom. He can do no wrong in my eyes (well ears actually) right now. Instead of spoiling the rest of the mix, I will let you enjoy it and be surprised. Also, check out some of Moises Mestas older mixes. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Also, I wanted to mention the updated DPC Events Page. You can find it here. Use it to keep up to date with all of the upcoming dance parties in the Washington DC Area. Shoot us an e-mail if you would like us to add an event: DPChronicles@gmail.com.

Letters, Moullinex, and Winners

Dear DPC Readers (aka: our invisible Internet friends),

I've taken notice to the fact that we have acquired some new readers (Hi!) in the last two weeks, and it's been real swell. Let me rephrase that actually... DPC acquired new readers because we know you like free things. And hopefully our blog.

I hope you didn't come expecting much. We're just three Hokies who happen to have a fondness for dance parties and whiskey. Maybe too much whiskey. We're three professionals. We're so professional in fact... that we have meetings while sitting at my kitchen table way too late at night. We drunkenly bounce ideas off one another, reminiscing about whatever show we happened to have just come home from and we're usually still drinking... whiskey... straight from the bottle. #wehavenoshame

Clearly you have stumbled across the RIGHT blog. And if you've been with us from the beginning, thank you. We hope you came for the mixes, and now stay because you realize you share the same appreciation and love for DDPs and music that we have. Because in the end, that's what it's all about.

The winners for a pair of tickets to the Aeroplane, Cassian, and DJ Provoke show on Saturday were comments # 28 (K. Latimer) and #7 (Anne R.). Please email us at dpchronicles@gmail.com so we can pass along your information to U Hall.

Even if you don't end up winning the giveaway, we still hope you come say "hi" to any of us at the show. I can't speak for Rashad or Tyler because they aren't nearly as awkward as I am, but if I run away, it's not because I don't like you - it's because I really am super awkward. It's also really dark at U Hall, and sometimes I like dancing in the corner.

You can still buy tickets here, doors open at 10pm - we'll see you on the dance floor!

Sincerely,

Becca (and Rashad and Tyler)

And because this post has nothing to do with anything other than a weird letter for new readers and how we are so UNPROFESSIONAL, here's what I listened to whilst writing this courtesy of Moullinex (GOMMA <3<3 SWOON) from May 2010. Such a classic and full of amazing tracks - love the 30 minute drop, because let's be real: THAT'S WHAT DDPs ARE ALL ABOUT PEOPLE!Link

DPC Guest Mix Series 09: Sneakers in the Dryer

Variety is most definitely the spice of life, ya dig? And by that I mean you should change it up. Don't get bored. If there's one thing I hate: it's being bored.

Go on adventures. Meet new friends. Start a blog (but not one about dance parties - that's our job?). Get new hobbies. Wander.

You see, when I go to shows/dance parties/whatever, it's just a known fact that I won't stay put. It's like an unwritten rule or something. I have a gift, and sometimes my friends really hate me for it. Especially if I meet weirdos (full disclosure: I believe this has only happened once. Sorry I almost had you drive home some rando friend, Rashad).

Meeting new people is fun. Meeting new people who love music like you is fun. And when you meet someone who spins music that you love it's obviously awesome/fate. Duh.

For our 9th (holy crap) installment of our Guest mix series, we have Sneakers in the Dryer (Eric Henderson), a Virginia Tech alum (!!!).

Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, Sneakers in the Dryer has been keeping dance parties real; playing at venues and festivals throughout Maryland and Virgina. In fact, his DC debut is this Friday, February 10th when he hits the decks with Mr. Bonkerz' at Shenaniganz. If you're in the DC area, I highly recommend this party.

I've said this before, but I love our guest mix series. It's hands down my favorite aspect of le blog - we haven't had a mix that's disappointed, and all of them showcase DJs/Producers that we love and fully give the "DPC Stamp of Approval". It's our-so-called spice of life, and we are extremely excited to share this mix with you today.

One look at the track list and you would be crazy not to listen. You shouldn't judge a mix by its track list (or should you?), but I was pleased to see tons of DFA as well as house tracks sprinkled throughout the 70 minute dance party. At the 13 minute mark, Metro Area's "Dance Reaction" drops, and you can't help but start nodding your head. More notable tracks include "Your Everything" by Danny Daze and Julio Bashmore's "Battle for Middle You". And yes, I will get down, thank you very much. I love Cosmic Kids' remixes, and love that SITD included "Reginald's Groove" (YES!!!!!!!). The mix rounds out with a Greg Wilson (swoon) edit of "Full Tilt Boogie" and I was actually left wanting more funky dance parties. The best and WORST kind of feeling ever.

Like what you hear? Stalk check out Sneakers in the Dryer on Facebook. Follow him on SoundCloud. And don't forget to check out his DC Debut at Shenaniganz this Friday, February 10th.

Guest Mix Series 09: Sneakers in the Dryer by DancePartyChronicles

Space Ranger - January Mix

It was tough deciding what to write about for my post today. January has been kicked off with an abundance of heaters and this week especially has seen all sorts or jam ridden mixes. Maybe there will be a mixtape grab bag this weekend to make sure you all are caught up...

Anyway, I always seem to forget the “Chronicles” part of this whole DPC thing, and usually just dive straight into to whatever mix has me in dance party mode. But I’m a little giddy today because later this evening, at our usual spot, the lovely Ms. Maya Jane Coles (“Ms.” for now; we’re soon to wed, though she may not know it yet) will be letting loose some deep house flavor on the District. The event is all courtesy of Blisspop, and features Blisspop selectors and DPC friends: Chris Nitti & Lxsx Frxnk. This one has deep and sexy written all over it! The trick will be to get enough liquid courage (a.k.a whiskey) in me summon the balls to propose to Ms.Coles; and hopefully not get kicked out the venue. Enough with the inane rantings of a hopeless dance floor romantic…Let’s jump into mix. As I mentioned before, there were exactly too many to choose from. So I decided to go with was one that I felt didn’t get as much love/plays as it very well deserves. I’m thinking it just got lost in the wave of mixes that were released early on this week. This one just so happens to come from one of my absolute favorites, the Germany based trio:

This came from their press kit...I had to use it!
Today’s offering is self labeled as “Deep Hypno Disko”. Yup, it is indeed deep and entrancing. Flavors vary from House, NuDisco, and Disco-House; all smooth and sexy. I was about to list a few of the jammers I particularly enjoyed, but realized it encompassed most of the damn mix. Let’s just say Pete herbert & Golden fleece - The Bells of Hackney immediately grabbed my attention, and the mix didn't let up till its conclusion. (Oh, and Calor & Mike Gill - Carte Blanche is pretty dirty too!) I was hoping to hear some their stuff in the mix, but there’s no love lost as this it had me in the zone throughout. I commented about looking forward to some new stuff from Space Ranger and apparently they “were quite busy, had a release on Greenskeepers Music, did a couple of remixes and have another release on lovemonk coming up next month”. Well alright...I can live with that!

Enjoy!

Disco Tech - Rock The Disco

Oh, Hello there fellow Dance-aholics

If you’re like me, come Friday, I tend to have little Discoon the brain. Better yet, it’s in my soouuulll(*Don Cornelius Voice*). Seriously though, my addiction symptoms usually start with somefoot tapping, at around 108 BPM. Next comes the head nodding. And finally, the anxiety setsin because some mix is giving me the insatiable desire to get up and boogie, BUT it’s only noon: #DancePartyProblems

We need to start a research foundation or something…

Alright, well let’s get into what you came here for. The mix that’s currently triggering my Dance Party addiction symptoms today comes by way of DiscoTech. Fresh from his decks, this off-the-cuff mix is entitled Rock the Disco. Expect some classics, expect some stuff you may not be familiar but probably should be considered classic, and prep your ears for some super solid edits of both the former. The man is an expert technician when it comes to editing. So be absolutely sure to check out his work, and follow him on SoundCloud to stay up to date with his seemingly endless stream of sweet disco edits. No doubt in my mind that you all will thoroughly enjoy this mix; there’s funk, soul, and disco heat to kick off your weekend on a proper note…kick, snare,hi hat, or funky guitar lick(whatever works for you!).

No tracklist...so just focus on gettin' your groove on!

DPC Guestmix Series 07: Cooper Saver

We would like to interrupt your regularly scheduled program right now. Sorry we're not sorry, but you're probably:
  1. Lounging around at home
  2. Recovering from a post-holiday hangover (sugar, food, or alcohol induced - pick your poison, and if you say all three - well, that's just impressive)
  3. Trying to avoid family activities - so you're locking yourself in your room to read your fave blog, The Dance Party Chronicles
  4. All of the above.
And we'd like to ask you to turn your attention to the following important announcement. Because this announcement is more important than relaxation, recovery, other dance parties, family, or all of the above.

We have the final guestmix of 2011 for you. Right now. Today. Here. So read up, and listen.

You totally read that right. We've got another guest mix for you - just in time to close out 2011 - which proved to be an amazing year in music.

Every album reviewed, every concert attended where hipsters DID NOT DANCE (too many), every shot taken, every beer chugged, and every mix "chronicled" - it's tough to encompass all of that in one mix.

Fortunately, for all of us, we have someone who has basically done a lot of the hard work for us. Cooper Saver (uh.. remember when we featured him before in a Mid-Day DDP?!) was gracious to provide DPC with an exclusive mix full of gems of 2011 and some new tracks you need to get familiar with. #winning

The mix starts out with a summer-time favorite edit, "Juicy Fruit" by Dr. Dru & Adana Twins - the track makes me want to open up my imaginary sunroof and blare my stereo for strangers and pedestrians to enjoy - complete with dance moves. And after a quick glance at the tracklist, I'm sure all of you looked at Goldroom's remix of "Mother Protect" and squealed like a little girl. Trust me, I did too. I am so freaking obsessed with the track it's not even funny, and the segue from Cooper's own edit into it was very nice (hint: 7'ish minute mark).

To be completely honest, it's hard to go through an entire mix, and pinpoint every. little. thing. that I love (or I could and you'd want me to shut up), but this guestmix has had me going back through at numerous points and realizing that indeed, I loved each and every song. The deeper vibes around 18 minutes with Matt Fear's remix of "On the Road" comes to mind in particular. I've had friends drop the track before and let me tell you, there's nothing better than hearing that bassline thumping through a well-equipped sound system. Seriously, people!! It's amazing.

There's a little bit of everything packed into 64 minutes. From Rory Phillips' track at the 37 minute mark...Uh yea, hi, Rory Phillips, you make a mean remix, let's get married... I'm not creepy - to Runaway's take on Azari & III's deep house hit, "Hungry for the Power". Cooper Saver's mix has it all. Think of it as a nice reminder of all that 2011 had to offer - and more! #doublewinning

So! If you want to catch up on Cooper's upcoming gigs, new mixes, or stalk him, you should probably "like" him on Facebook, follow him on Twitter, or get his updates via SoundCloud. I also should add, he does a lot of freelancing and has had a chance to interview tons of DPC favorites - I highly recommend checking out his website, for some awesome pictures/interviews/information!

And because we had so much fun interviewing Drop Out Orchestra about a month ago, we decided to ask Cooper a few questions. Please check out the interview below. Completely uncensored (ohhh!) and borderline hilarious (Uhmm, dubstep shouldn't be requested at shows, people!)

DPC: 2011 has been a great year of albums, mixes, concerts and singles. What's your favorite album of 2011, mix, concert and single?

CS:
Favorite album = Holy Ghost! self titled.
Favorite mix = I had Poolside's "Day" mix on repeat all summer, so I'll go with that.
Favorite concert = Cut Copy at Coachella was amazing, but seeing Midnight Magic a few months ago ruled...hard to say!
Favorite single = That would be a battle between Azari & III "Manic" vs Crazy P "Open For Service."

DPC: You contribute a ton to the LA-based blog, uhohdisco.com, how did your passion for sharing DDPs with others start? And when did you decide to start to delve into your own music?

CS: It just happened on its own a long time ago. When I was in school my friends would always ask me if I had any new music to recommend, so I figured why not start a blog. You won't be able to find that blog anymore, but I ended up getting into it and posting for other sites up to the present time. UhOhDisco has been a lot of fun and I've been fortunate enough to have the flexibility to post whatever I like; Stephen is the man. I didn't really understand the whole DJ thing when I was blogging 5 years ago, but it happened quickly and sort of took over. It seemed like a natural progression at the time and it became a lot more than just a hobby. The next step is definitely spending more time on finishing my own music.

DPC: While DJing, what's the funniest "request" you've had?

CS: Oh this is a good one. Over the summer I had two young guys come up to the booth and get a little overly aggressive toward me because I ignored their extremely strong desire for some dubstep, and the bouncer had to get them away for my safety haha. I don't DJ with a computer, so I couldn't have pleased them even if I wanted to. But that was more of a threat than a request! Luckily I don't get that too often.

DPC: If you find yourself in the middle of a huge dance party, what are you holding in your hand (drink wise)? And what's your signature dance move?

CS: I could lie and say something very classy, but we all know I'm taking whatever those complimentary drink tickets are going to get me. As far as signature dance move, I think it's too early into the game to claim one. If one thing's for sure, I'll be embarrassing myself on dance floors all over the world forever trying to accomplish this.

Thursday Thoughts...

On a Wednesday night.

If you're reading this I'm out and about in DC seeing this guy - AHHHH (!!!!) and probably taking a whiskey shot or two to the face. Right. About. NOW.

I'm obsessed with this track. Like...drop my whiskey ginger on the ground and run away because I'm so embarrassed but need to keep dancing obsessed. I hope he plays it. Let's hope I'm not holding a drink in my hand.

Mark E - RnB Drunkie by future classic

I violated another chicken this past weekend with a Natty Boh can. My friend fashioned a holder for said chicken with three forks and he stood up just fine. I can't say the same about the can. Did a million "TWSS" just come to your mind, too? #michaelscottrules

Last week I made cranberry bread. It was so good I had to take an artistic picture of it to show everyone. That's butter on that spoon right there. Yea, just a hunk of butter - hanging out. And if you're wondering, yea... I did eat the butter on the spoon after I took the picture. #pleasestillbemyfriend

Rashad is having his DEBUT at the 9:30 Club Backbar this weekend with our friend, Mr. Bonkerz. I'm 99.9% sure that shit is going to get wild. EVERYONE (yes, everyone) will be there, and there will be cookies. This is SO my kind of dance party. If you're in town, what are you waiting for (?!?) Hop on that gravy train!

If I don't stop typing, I'll have to go to Mark E. unshowered and in my workout clothes. Which sounds like a really good idea, but I don't want to be the smelly girl. Not that I would know what that feels like or anything. So, I leave you with this little diddy. Pretend like you're there with me, too! +1 if you have a shot whilst listening.

Business Casual Disco - Anyone for Tennis?

You know what is always a good idea? Salted Caramel Cheesecake Pie with a Gingersnap Crust. It's a party in your mouth, and trust me. You WANT to be invited.

Beautiful sunsets with friends are also a good idea.

And so are alcoholic beverages. Specifically ones that taste like you ate a fireball (holy yum) or ones that taste like you are eating cookie dough, but also getting you drunk. #winning

Needless to say, this past Thanksgiving holiday was wonderful; starting and ending with dance parties, with more dance parties in between, and a Virginia Tech win to cap it all off (H O K I E S!) If you don't follow our Facebook page, you might want to get on that gravy train because we post a lot of content that isn't posted on the blog. Including funny pictures of censored turkeys, signs that I don't understand, and funny searches that lead strangers to our blog.

And now you're sitting there wondering, "Why is Becca bringing up DPC's Facebook page?" First, because we obviously want more friends. But also because friends of DPC recently posted a mix on it, and I am currently obsessed. Therefore, YOU should be too. Duh.

Business Casual Disco is comprised of three gentlemen; Coltrane, Norrin and Skeeba who together, create smooth, Balearic disco beats that keep people's heads nodding and bodies moving. Based out of Connecticut, the trio dropped their debut mix for listeners on Sunday night to get a taste of what BCD is all about.

This is another good idea (like cheesecake, sunsets, and cookie alcohol) because this mix is the bomb.com. It's the slap bracelet you wore when you were in elementary school. It's the Adidas Superstars you wore in middle school. It's the Smirnoff Ice you drank in high school (someone tell me I wasn't the only one). It's the peanut butter goodness in the center of a Reese's. It's the James Murphy to disco. So. Freaking. Fly.

Basically - you need this in your life. Now.

A quick look at the track list was the first indicator that this would be a smooth disco dance party, but after listening to it three times in less than 12 hours, I can tell everyone that the transitions are solid, and smooth doesn't even begin to describe the feel of this mix. I love knowing that there are three different people contributing to the mix, but all of them adding their own touch to the mix without straying too far away from one another to realize what was going on (does that make sense?!) It was love at first listen with this "Back Hand Disco Love" mix (see genre in Soundcloud), and it left me wanting more (!!!)

So yea....Your first order of business is to give this mix a listen. Second order of business: find me a slap bracelet. Third: If you're in the Connecticut area, head to The Space in Hamden, CT on December 10th.
