DPC Guestmix Series 13: Disco Tech

The 13th installment of our DPC Guestmix Series comes today from Disco Tech.  Disco Tech (not to be confused with Discotech) is a producer/DJ/turntablist from Stockholm, Sweden.  As his name might imply, he specializes in all things Disco as well as Funk, Soul, and Hip Hop.  He has made a name for himself  by taking old-school tracks in these genres, and editing them to have more nu-school, dancier vibe.

This year, Disco Tech launched his own label, called DiscoDat and has been busy pumping out releases.  In April, he released his own First Pressure EP which consisted of 6 re-works of some classic songs (You can buy it here).  This EP was followed by two volumes of his Funky Heroes releases which all feature Disco Tech edits of some excellent Soul, Funk, and Disco tracks.  If you enjoy that old-school vibe, then you have to check these out (Vol 1, Vol 2).  Volume 3 is in the works and should be out soon.  DiscoDat has also recently released two compilation albums, featuring various artists, including Disco Tech.  These releases are called Tales From the City (Vol 1, Vol 2).  On top of all of this, Disco Tech also has three volumes of DJ friendly edits packs that he has done that are all available on his website.

Magnier (House of Disco) - Slo-mo Radio Mix

Today's mix comes to you from David Magnier.  David Magnier is the founder of The House of Disco.  Much like The Dance Party Chronicles, The House of Disco began as a blog where Magnier could share his disco and house music findings with friends.  While it is still a blog, it has evolved into a record label that has released tracks from the likes of Toomy Disco, Psychemagic, Satin Jackets, Debonair, and Roberto Rodriguez to name a few.  The House of Disco will release their fourth EP, Busy Tone EP, on May 7 and can be previewed below.  Their first three EP's have been stellar and judging from these snippets, this one will be also.  In addition to releasing original material, the House of Disco has a reputation of releasing some top notch Guest Mixes.

Kid Color LIVE at Smart Bar (4/13/2012)

First and foremost: HUGE shout out of to Mr. Bonkerz, Business Casual Disco, and Orchard Lounge for providing D.C. with some very fine dance parties this weekend. Oh, and we can't forget the readers we were able to meet. DPC had an amazing time dancing and partying our asses off with you all.

To put it plainly:

    Thanks!
      -DPC Crew

The weekend is gone, and it’s back to reality. That doesn't mean the fun stops completely though.  The Windy City native, Kyle “Kid Color” Woods has got a little something for today’s disco dance party. It’s a live mix recorded at SmartBar where he currently holds a residency. -The DPC crew may need to take a road trip out there, as SmartBar is also home to a few of our favorite selectors like Orchard Lounge and Kate Simko- The set was recorded earlier this month and is a meeting of Disco for lovers and partiers alike. The first half of the mix is rowderier with a bit of sex appeal sprinkled about. The Only Children - “Richard Morris” to a Revenge rework of Marvin Gaye's “Heavy Love Affair” segment  is just great in it's selection and mixing.

Moises Mestas - Spring Mixtape

I love this time of year. The sun is shinning. The birds are chirping. The whiskey flows like water, and the dance parties get a bit more boisterous. Oh, did I mention the ladies in their sundresses? It’s as if there is a species of women that emerge as the season changes. Maybe it’s the pollen that draws them out, or maybe it’s the jovial soundscape of the springtime music? Well whatever it is, I’ve got something "Spring Fling Themed" (say that 3 times fast) that captures the pre-summer romance and jubilation of the season.

Today’s "Hump Day" mix, comes by way of Moises Mestas. The Mexico City native has been doing it around the country for 10 years and currently holds a residency at the exclusive club, LOVE. Keep your ears open for some original productions and remixes from him. But in the meantime, let’s dive into it!

A DPC friend shared this one with me (shout-out Nicky T!) and I’m very glad he did. It’s got a great blend of the sounds I’m particularly fond of lately: lively Disco and and sexy House. It opens with Open Children’s “Down Fever”, which is a fun NuDisco track with airy vocals and an uplifting synth chord progression. Dublin Aunt’s Deep House track, “No Holding Back”, immediately follows. Both have those R&B vocal samples DPC has been infatuated with as of late. The former from Wayne Wonder’s “No Letting Go”, and +1 to whoever can ID the latter for me.

Illija Rudman’s Interpretation of Escot’s “Cameleon Chameleon” is light and lush disco romp. It’s classic disco elements keep things fun and allows it segue nicely into Roberto Rodriguez’s NuDisco love affair track, “Tell Me”. Listen up for the lyrical symmetry between the two tracks’ vocals; a lovely touch to the mix. “Tell Me” is a simply great selection in my opinion. The male and female vocals work well together and the love struck lyrics are what Spring is all about.

The mix takes a bit a of turn after the seamless transition from “Cave Disco” to “This Time Around”. It’s like a sunset into the sexyness of night as things venture into deep/jackin’ House territories. But like the sun never fails to, the energy rises again to close out the mix strong. I loved the refreshing breezes of Disco and House [see: hear: The Mekanism Can’t Believe (Mario Basnov Remix) and Storm Queen - Look Right Through]. If you couldn’t tell, I very much enjoyed listening to and writing about this mix, so I’ll shut up and let you get to it now!

A DP Chronicle and BXENTRIC- The November Jockey Club

Well, as this blog is called the Dance Party Chronicles, I figured I should fill you all in on an epic Dance Party that went down this past Saturday. The DPC crew headed to the new Filmore in Silver Spring, MD to catch Breakbot and Chromeo. Breakbot was the opener and we made sure to get there early so we didn't miss a second. Personally, I hadn't listened to too much Breakbot until about a month ago. I had heard his hits like "Fantasy" and "Baby I'm Yours" and a few remixes but not too much else. About a month ago I started listening to his mixes and a few live sets and was blown away. Soon after, I discovered he was touring with Chromeo and had a show in the area. I was pumped.

Breakbot had just started when we arrived at the show and we were ready to get down. He threw down an incredible set that left us all wanting more. At one point, he dropped the beat so hard I literally swallowed my gum. Later in the night Chromeo played a funktastic set that was also a lot of fun. I got the chance to briefly talk to Breakbot at one point after his set. He was really nice and down to earth. I talked to him about his some of his mixes and he also taught me the proper pronunciation of his first name (its Tih-bow in case you were curious). All in all, it was a great night and another successful dance party.

Moving on. November is upon us, which means a fresh batch of new mixes has started to be released. Last night, BXENTRIC released his latest mix in his Jockey Club monthly mix series. It has a lot of tracks that I am not very familiar with which is always a breath of fresh air. It is 77 minutes of disco funk with some deep house thrown is there as well. I really enjoyed this mix and its definitely worth checking out. Happy Hump Day to all.

THEHOTLUNCH by Derrick Carter

Well here's something special!

World renowned House legend, Derrick Carter has put together a get-down booty-shakin' Disco mix for Oki-ni. Mr. Carter digs deep in his crates to put together some old school and classic Disco tracks. There's stuff by Pattie Labelle, Chaka Khan, Nick Straker Band, and even Italo legend Gino Soccio. Oh man, this one is for Disco lovers! It's a Disco history lesson and dance party packed into a hour mix.

Here's some words from the man himself:
Using that as my main focus, I decided to go on a disco & classics trip, which I think will work lovely if you want to listen to it while eating lunch at your desk, walking to get some grub, or just sitting on a bench and watching the rest of the world do its thing.

I hope y'all enjoy it.'

My Friends are Talented

I attempted to stay in this past weekend to be responsible. But somehow between a date with the treadmill (cardio disco party), the 2+ hours of shopping for black flats for work (epic fail), frustration (because of said fail), iced coffee (I have a caffeine addiction, and I'm not afraid to admit it), and baking pumpkin whoopie pies (holy yum!), I still found myself at the 9:30 Club.

I guess I'll blame my 9:30 Club appearance on the fact that I decided (WILLINGLY) to sit-out on Virgin Mobile Free Fest. This decision was after telling myself that last year's Free Fest was not very free (I like beer and fun?), and I'd probably fair better staying in DC. #asiangirlproblems

So there I was, in DC, realizing that my friends were dance partying it up with James Murphy, Empire of the Sun, Calvin Harris and Cee-Lo (don't act like you wouldn't want to see him.) and I came to this realization: music is ingrained into my brain. I love to see it. I love to write about it. I love to talk about it. And I certainly enjoy dancing to it. Okay, Okay - I like drinking to it, too. And although I am ALL about some music, there are some things that I cannot do with it.

Beat match. Song choice. Transition. DJ.

I think you get the idea. It takes someone with dedication, patience, and a knack for music to really be successful with DJ'ing (in my book), and I truly believe I have some talented friends and acquaintances. It actually boggles my mind knowing how many of my friends are so freaking talented because then there's me: that girl running around the dance floor twirling. With Natty Boh in both hands.

DPC readers are probably not aware that Rashad (Remote Ctrl) has recently delved into the DJ realm, and has hit the ground running. The only complaint that I had of this mix was that it ended and it left me wanting more. I think the song choice alone should give you an idea of what to expect (read: AWESOMENESS. DANCE PARTIES. HAPPINESS). And around the 7'ish minute mark I felt as though I was in some kind of disco Mario Party (Nintendo should really get on that idea) that included the perfect amounts of beeps and boops to contrast some questionable lyrics (uhhh, Rashad?!)

The transitions throughout the mix were impressive. I love when DJs can pretty much segue into a song while I'm lost and entranced in the beat, leaving me to wonder where one song stopped and another started because it was transitioning into the next part. I especially loved the section from "New Life" into "I Don't Know" at the 15 minute mark; it was the right amount of downtempo laced into some spacey beats. And do I really need to say anything about the ending? Rashad included Moonlight Matters' Remix of "Painted Eyes" and ended the mix with a great bouncy, disco remix by Space Ranger.

Please take a listen to the mix, and not just because Rashad is like my best friend forever. Seriously! You should take a listen because it's a good one, I promise you will not be disappointed - except at the very end when it ends.

The Revenge: Throwing Shapes Mix

Hey folks

Sorry my last post didn't have a hot mix for you to jam to this morning. Here's one from Britain's Graeme Clarke (a.k.a The Revenge).

This "Throwing Shapes Mix" is sexy blend of deep house and disco. No tracklist, but I recognized a few that I really liked. A remix of Anthony Collins' "Don't Look Down Now" and the 6th Bourough Project's "Sometimes the Fool" to name a few. Around the 3/4 mark he drops some super funky old school disco then promply jumps back to deep house to close things out. This a great mix through and through. So have at it!

New Remix from the Magician

My absolute favorite DJ as of late, The Magician, works his ma-...wait, that's too easy....*ahem* ...has a go at Wolf Gang's indie-pop number "Stay and Defend". Taking a different approach than usual, he adds a smile inducing tropical flavor to the already lighthearted track. The track is driven by a disco beat and a steel drum provides a cheerful Caribbean melody, perfect for that summer-time vibe. This one is different. It's cheerful and fun, and I like that. Have a listen!

What do you all think??

(Almost forgot: Watch out for a "Spotlight" post featuring The Magician soon!)
