Summer Series GuestMix Volume 3: The Beat Broker - Classy Dancer 6.5

Annnd we’re back.

The DPC Crew has been busy behind the scenes, on the decks, and (of course) on the dancefloor...
The music this summer has been just as hot as the temperature. We’d like to keep it up with the next installment to our Summer Series of Guestmixes...and I think we've done just that with some Disco heat by way of Cali’s The Beat Broker?!

 Let’s get you familiar with this dance party dealer.

Ryan Bishop (This picture commands a more formal title.) has been brokering beats as a DJ/Producer for over 10 years. Starting out as part of the duo Broker/Dealer, Mr. Bishop and long time friend, Ryan Fitzgerald, began DJing a regular party in San Francisco where they pumped German Minimal Techno, classic 80s Electro, Italo-Disco tunes. Beat Broker began creating his edits, remixes, and original productions in their live sets to be able to set the mood exactly how he wanted. Inspired by the cosmic and synthy sounds coming from Germany, these works would later be released on various labels and be the basis of the Beat Broker sound.

Ryan has a way melding classic sounds and contemporary ideas. I always imagine myself pimp strolling through space when I listen to his tracks:

Limit was recently released by Groove Democracy on their ‘Spain v.s. U.S.A. compilation this. Grab that shit!

The Beat Broker has a deep catalog of, not only tracks, but DJ mixes as well. Each one showcasing the various themes that represent his style and flavor. There are the appropriately named: “Freak ‘n’ Roll”, “Midnight Energy”, “Ladies Night”, “Cosmic Kind Buds”, and the hands down DPC favorite: Classy Dancer. Classy Dancer is a series actually that recently marked its sixth iteration. The thing I love about these mixes is that lend themselves to great for rush hour commute zone outs or lush disco dance parties. Classy Dancer, in our eyes, has become Beat Broker’s signature series. Though you won’t see them on a monthly basis, they are always worth the wait. We saw Volume 6 in March and it was instant vintage dance party material...Oh, and classy as fuck. It may very well have been the first mix to include a dress code (a strict one at that):

"Dress Code: For the Gentlemen a black tailcoat with matching trousers trimmed by a ribbon of braid or satin on the outside of each trouser leg. The Ladies an evening dress with a full skirt, possibly with open back and low neck line. Elbow-length gloves are also a nice addition for the Lady."

We’re not very patient when it comes to dance parties. We want them, and we want them now! So we asked Ryan to do us a solid and put together something to share with you all and hold us over. Well, lo and behold, we’ve got been brokered a Classy Dancer of our own to share with you fine folks! DPC is honored to be able to add Classy Dancer 6.5 to our Summer Series and we know you all will enjoy it.

The Beat Broker - Live at Public Works (April 2011)

I don't believe that the Beat Broker needs an introduction on The Dance Party Chronicles. We have an undying love for his Classy Dancer mixes, and have been itching to hear and/or see the California native live. He posted a live mix from the Public Works via his webpage with a free download link late Saturday evening.

It was basically love at first listen. At the 10 minute mark, a funky disco track "Nocturn" (A1 Mix), by Francesco Pacarella, "Majic-Kaboola" by GeeGee & Gym Band caused an immediate disco dance party (DDP) to ensue, then segued quite nicely into another funky number "Make Your Body Move", by Roy B, at 13 minutes. Holy freaking dance party; I can only imagine what was going on in San Francisco as the Beat Broker dropped it. The mix transitioned nicely into some spacey selections at 30 minutes. A wave of nostalgia hit me as Mikeburns' track, "Galaktattakk", geared up with a familiar track from Classy Dancer 1; complete with its violins and haunting, but beautiful, samples in the background. I cannot say enough about this track!

The segue into 40 minutes in. Lord, help me. "Burning Love" by Glossy is what dance parties are made of, I kid you not. I guarantee that I would have lost my shit if I were in San Francisco. I probably would've dropped my beer in the middle of the dance floor (again) and proceeded to yell something about Classy Dancer 1 to my friends the closest person next to me. The live mix ended with DJ Gregory's "Don't Know Malendro"; another gem from Classy Dancer 1.

I've listened to the mix three four (including the one my commute to work this morning) times since Saturday night, and I recommend you start your Monday off with this DDP. So who's with me? Petition to get the Beat Broker on an east coast tour, stat.

Friday Mixtape Buffet

Hello Cyber Friends!  Hope everyone had a good week.  I want to give a big shout out to everyone who came out to the Don Cornelius - Soul Train Tribute Party this past Friday night.  It was quite a funkin' dance party if I do say so myself.  It was such a blast to get down to old school disco tunes in funky-fresh throwback gear and to shake it in a Soul Train dance line!  One of the highlights was the disco edit of the Star Wars theme. Things quickly turned into a dark side disco dance party.  Now if I could direct you attention to the Darth Vader Disco Ball... someone buy me one, please! On a side note, my latest batch of home brewed beer is a Black IPA called Death Star IPA.  I somehow thought that this was relevant.

Well enough random commentary and on to the music.  This week we were blessed with a plethora of mixes and many of them were heat rocks (Note: Heat rocks are different than kick rocks). Below you will find hopefully enough music to keep you dancing through the weekend. Feast your ears on these and as they say, "A dance party a day, keeps the doctor away."

 

 We've been waiting for Classy Dancer VI for a while now and here it is.  I actually just started this mix, but if its anything like the previous 5 Classy Dancers it is going to be amazing.

This is the first mix from A.N.D.Y.  This is the new project of Andy Faisca, who was a part of the DJ duo Mustang, before they split at the end of last year.  Definitely a very good first mix for his new solo project.

The Beat Broker: Classy Dancer 5

Well SoundCloud has been blowing up with end of the month mixes since Aeroplane's In Flight Entertainment was released yesterday. Of the ones I've listened to so far (Magic Tape 16 is up next on my playlist), this one has been my favorite.

The Beat Broker released the fifth installment of his "Classy Dancer" mix series earlier today. This mix is great all the way through, with some awesome songs mixed in and really smooth transitions throughout. It would be more appropriately named "Dirty Dancer 5" because it would be tough to dance classy with some of the dirty disco beats thrown down in this mixtape. It was tough sitting still in my chair at work while listening to it. I got a couple of strange looks from co-workers that saw me rocking out. There are too many heavy hitting tracks to even single out a few that stood out.

This mix even came with dancing directions and an instructional video of how to "Pop and Lock." I would recommend muting the video and listening to the mix as you watch. It definately goes together better. I will most likely be busting this out this weekend:


"Start with the feet shoulder length apart, with your weight on the left foot. Take a step backwards with your right foot, then the left, and then the right again. Tap the left foot against the insole of the right while clapping your hands, and keep the weight on the right foot. Repeat this step starting on the left foot. Once you are comfortable with the footwork, you can add the arms. When not clapping, bend the arms at the elbow. Your hands will be in fists with the thumbs on the top. Swing the elbows out to the sides, making an up and down motion to flow with each step."

What do Lamps and Hipsters have in Common?

They don't dance. I just made that up. Is that offensive? I'm not sure if it is or not, cause I literally just picked the first inanimate object that popped into my head. I'm sorry I'm not sorry if I offended anyone who just read that. Although, if I did offend you, I can only guess that you either have this weird obsession with lamps, or you're a hipster. I digress.

Welcome to The Dance Party Chronicles. Why? Because we like to dance! (.....Sorry if you don't). God, that's really going to get old. I must admit, my judgment cannot always be trusted. (Full disclosure: I'm usually at the bar, commanding jager bombs). I'm also easy to please (Full dislclosure: give me a cupcake and I'll be happy). I love a good beat. I love anything that makes me want to tap my feet. Maybe twirl in circles, or even bust out a 'carwash' move every once in awhile (Full disclosure: that's my dance move. Come pick me out of a crowd. Trust me, it won't be hard).

Anyway, back to the 'substance' of this post. I just got home from an awesome concert. Actually, my co-author did, too. And I'm pretty sure we both can agree on a few things...

1. The 9:30 Club is so much more appealing when beer is free for an hour. Especially when you can get four beers at a time. Seriously. I don't know what was better; the look I got from the bartender as I awkwardly tried to carry four beers away from the bar, or the music.
   
2. Hipsters don't dance. I think if there could be a math equation that could fit what happened tonight it would be hipsters^squared = I've never seen so many heads nodding.
   
3. When going to concerts, you can't ever expect anything like a jam band concert. And this is something I just cannot get over. Wait. You're not playing for 3 hours? With two sets?! How dare you!
   

Okay. So all jokes aside. Yeasayer was great. If you know me, I love dance parties. I love disco. And I love anything with soulful, deep undertones - and this was not it. I'd like to consider myself (after tonight) a more musically open-minded human being, so I will give myself a pat on the back.

I think the best part about this concert was in the middle (so this means about 20 minutes in...), my friend looks over at me and goes, "ugh, this is the exact same as the Cut Copy show." And it's like Yeasayer knew what we were thinking, "Come on, more energy!"

Soon after, the tempo picked up. Our bodies started moving, and we slowly realized that seriously, this band can get weird. I heard something between animal, tribal cries, and undertones of synthy beats (I can't make this shit up - though maybe the four beers in my mind can).

I left feeling rather satisfied. And happy. Because if you didn't already know from reading about three times - I freaking LOVE dance parties.

Please stay tuned for another post. I assure you most of the posts will not be solely 'reviews'. Because let's be honest, and I am a very honest person.... I like to have fun. And my co-author does too. Therefore, most of the time, while we can analyze and appreciate the music, we're there to let loose, and not stress. And that in turn means we're having a blast with some of our closest friends, dancing and drinking the night away. This also gives opportunities for awesome stories. If you know me, I am like the awkwardest person...ever. So I'm pretty sure some embarrassing, awkward, yet hilarious stories will surface at one point or another.

This blog will also feature tons of mixes that are listened to, and other music that we deem appropriate. Disco, funk, soul, deep house, etc etc. You like it, we'll probably feature it. So please, grab a seat, some popcorn, and your headphones. Cause it's about to get weird.

And just because you've read all of this nonsense, I'll leave you with some parting music. This mix features one of my favorite DJs who surprisingly hails from the United States. This mix is very dancy, hence the name, and can get you going through that 2 PM snooze fest you want to take. Around the 13 minute mark it starts to pick up, and it can also be a great motivator whilst on a run! But most importantly, this mix can be enjoyed while changing a flat tire in the suburbs of Washington, DC (**cough cough** HA).
